As part of GMC registration, GMC requires all Doctors to demonstrate their English language proficiency in order to obtain a practice license.
All communication methods need to be demonstrated at GMC so you will need to prove your ability to listen, read, write and speak. There are various ways for Physicians to prove their knowledge of the English language, however, the simplest and most popular way to do this is to take an English educational knowledge test called IELTS or an English medical knowledge test called OET. In this blog post we will explore IELTS testing, provide helpful testing tips and provide the services of IELTS experts who can help you.
There are a variety of IELTS testing options, including Education, General Training and Academic UK Visa and Immigration (VI). At IMG for GMC registration we recommend that you take an Academic UK VI test, as this will satisfy both GMC and Visa requirements.
The listening, reading and writing sections of all the IELTS exams are completed on the same day, with no breaks between them. The talking feature of the test can be completed up to a week before or after the other three tests. Your IELTS testing center will advise you on this.
Additionally, each section of the IELTS test content can be formatted in any way – this includes graphs, multiple choice questions, similar lists and phrases for identifying information.

Obedience
There are four aspects to the IELTS compliance test. Each section will consist of ten questions and a total of forty questions. No special subject knowledge is required for listening tests as all answers will be provided in playback recordings. You will have 40 minutes to complete the listening test; you will listen for 30 minutes and then for the last 10 minutes transfer your answers to the answer sheet.
As mentioned above, once you have listened to the recording you should make sure that you forward your answers to your feedback page.
If you submit your feedback to us we advise you to follow the following tips. First, be aware of your handwriting. Although you may be delayed towards the end of the test you need to make sure that your writing is appropriate because if the marker cannot read your writing he will not be able to reward you with marks. The same rule applies to spelling, if you have incorrect spelling and then again, the examiner must mark it as incorrect.
Second, you will be given time to read the question before the recording is played – so be prepared for the topic and what important information you should look for.
Third, when you do your listening test if you can hear all the recording without panic, just try to listen to the keywords and focus on what you need to listen to.

Reading
The study section of the IELTS exam will give you three (sometimes four) learning areas that will grow in difficulty. The text provided will be authentic and is often taken from magazines, books and newspapers, the audience will be public and the topic will be of general interest.
The test will take 60 minutes, a total of 40 questions and each question will cost one mark.
When you take part in the study of your IELTS test, our first and most important advice is to make sure you understand what the question is asking and follow the question instructions carefully. Second, do not try and read all the words within the paragraph, the test tests your ability to scan and scan episodes to try to find the most important pieces of information. Lastly, we advise you to keep an eye on the time – do not spend too much time on one role!
